I thought the actual act of driving deserved a post on a blog about our road trip. So here is a snap shot of how we are getting from here to there…Our options for a vehicle on the trip started with my 1997 VW Passat that gets 45 mpg…which fit into the “let’s camp and keep the cost down” thing we initially discussed. The VW has over 170,000 miles on it and an 1800 mile trip didn’t seem like the wisest decision. The next few options were more short lived. A rental RV that fit into the let’s camp model…but would cost more to do than staying at the Hilton all 6 nights. The next option was Karl’s Suburban. That felt like the most “manly” guy thing to do…but the price of gas made that a bit unrealistic. Once we bailed on the “let’s camp” model for our trip, Karl’s 2007 Saturn Aura became the logical choice.
We have a Garmin sat-nav on the dash, an IPod for tunes, a cooler that plugs in, and cell phones, a camera and a laptop need to be charged. There are more wires in the car than in a hospital room! The one devise that doesn’t need a wire is the EZ Pass.
The EZ Pass has become a part of life on the east coast for years…however once we crossed from PA into OH, we found out how progressive we are “back east”. Apparently the same folks that built the PA Turnpike, moved into Ohio to build their Turnpike like 100 years ago. Well, the folks in Ohio haven’t kept up with the times and don’t have EZ Pass. (neither did Indiana…and Illinois is just doing it now). So boys and girls, don’t forget your cash if you travel west of the ultra progressive state of Pennsylvania.
